'73John Scharffenberger co-founded Scharffenberger Chocolates. He also founded Scharffenberger Cellars sparkling wine. While a grower of strawberries and nursery products in Mendocino County, Scharffenberger put into practice theories of organic farming and biodiversity he had learned at Berkeley and through his friendship with members of The Garden Project at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is an active advisor to several small food producing startups including Hodo Soy, Kaia Foods and Farmhouse Culture. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1973 with a combined major in botany, cultural anthropology, food history and geography.
