CNR Pre-Orientation

Pre-CalSO Planning Guide

Now that you have registered for CalSO, please complete these 6 required steps to ensure that you make the most of your time at the orientation. Bring copies of the handouts from steps 2-4 to CalSO, as they will help you and the advisor work to solidify your schedule.

Note that all documents are PDFs.

Step 1

Start learning the basics of using the online schedule of classes.

Step 2

The Tele-BEARS form will help organize your potential schedule. This form will help advisors answer questions that you have.

You may also use a scheduling grid for a more detailed view of your daily schedule.

Step 3

Fulfilling the “Entry Level Writing (ELW) and Reading and Composition (R&C) Requirements" hand out will help you determine whether you have met Berkeley’s Reading and Composition requirement, as well as suggest ways to fulfill it.

Step 4

Exploring the Majors offers a quick glance at common major requirements and suggestions for courses to take during your first year.

Step 5

You may also want to view some examples of first year schedules for the various CNR majors.

Step 6

Review Berkeley’s policy on AP transfer credit.

While many students come to CNR having taken various AP tests, the vast majority of students still elect to take introductory courses like Chemistry and Math since Berkeley courses tend to be much more rigorous than high school courses. Additionally, many graduate and medical schools require college level work, regardless of AP scores.

If you have questions about other University services like housing, financial aid, or health care, you may refer to this quick contact sheet for a variety of campus contact information.

Remember to review all of the materials prior to CalSO.

We look forward to meeting you!
