Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology

The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology, the University of California at Berkeley, seeks an Assistant or Associate Specialist (eleven-month tenure-track) in Cooperative Extension (CE), starting as early as July 1, 2011.

Responsibilities:

We expect the appointee to conduct research and coordinate public outreach to address practical problems with respect to obesity and associated diseases. We seek a candidate with leadership skills and ability to quickly assume a leadership role in the Atkins Center for Weight and Health, and to serve as the University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) Associate Director of Research/Nutrition, working with UC ANR’s Statewide Director for Youth, Families and Communities to coordinate statewide nutrition education and research activities. Applicants should have a bioscience Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree, with training and experience in nutrition related fields, such as, but not limited to, dietetics, community nutrition and/or public health nutrition. Moreover, we are interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their research and service. The appointee will have opportunity to participate in educating undergraduates. CE Specialists are part of a statewide network of some 400 academic staff dedicated to the creation, development and application of knowledge in agricultural, natural and human resources. They conduct extension education programs and applied research in collaboration with a wide variety of rural and urban groups. Their work both serves and draws upon community organizations, agricultural producers and their trade associations, other resource users and managers, and public agency officials at the local, state, and federal levels.
