Faculty Position

Energy and Resources Group

The Energy and Resources Group, University of California at Berkeley, is conducting a search for either Assistant Professor (tenure-track), or Associate Professor (tenured). Depending on the availability of the selected candidate, the appointment will start as early as January 1, 2013. This position will be for a joint appointment between the Energy and Resources Group (ERG) (50%) and the Environmental Energy Technologies Division (EETD) (50%) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL); LBNL is also prepared to provide summer support. These two institutions are international leaders in exploring economic, environmental, social, technical and other issues surrounding the transformation of energy into goods and services. Our goal is to strengthen and expand the energy analysis activities of both ERG and LBNL, and to forge closer links between the two institutions. We seek candidates who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship, teaching, and communication skills, as well as capacity to attract extramural research funding. Candidates should have publications or on-going projects in the broad area of energy systems analysis. We expect that the successful candidate will have grounding in quantitative methods, engineering, and/or policy analysis. Applications from individuals with interdisciplinary strengths, including expertise in qualitative methods and the social sciences, are encouraged. Additionally, the department is interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through teaching, research, and service. The ideal applicant will bring depth and breadth to ERG and LBNL through participation as project originator, leader, and collaborator. The applicant should be prepared to interact with program managers in federal and state agencies (such as Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, California Energy Commission, and California Air Resources Board) responsible for supporting research. The individual will be expected to develop research programs relevant to the scope of EETDs Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Department as well as ERG. EETDs Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Department conducts work in a number of broad areas, including energy efficiency and appliance standards, life cycle assessment, energy and environmental modeling, international and China energy studies, electricity markets and reliability, demand response, renewable energy, and the indoor environment (http://eetd.lbl.gov/about-us/organization/energy-analysis-and-environmental-impacts).

Responsibilities:

Primary teaching responsibilities for the position include teaching core courses and developing new curriculum for graduate and undergraduate students. The position also requires graduate student mentoring, and we are especially interested in individuals that have expertise and the ability to work with students in a range of disciplines. Teaching and academic departmental service obligations will be commensurate with the half-time appointment at the university.

Requirements:

Specific qualifications for the position are commensurate with its rank. Applicants for the Assistant Professor, joint UCB-LBNL position should have a Ph.D. in a field consistent with the areas covered by ERG and EETDs Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Department; research, experience and publications consistent with the areas of energy analysis enumerated above; and commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor and the expectations of a Staff Scientist at LBNL. Applicants for the Associate Professor, joint UCB-LBNL position should have a Ph.D. in a field consistent with the areas covered by ERG and EETDs Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Department; exemplary accomplishments in teaching, scholarly contributions, and a track record of securing extramural research funding in areas consistent with the areas of energy analysis enumerated above; and commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor and the expectations of a Senior Scientist at LBNL. For both levels, teaching experience relevant to the responsibilities described above is strongly desired.
