Stem Cell Education Outreach Materials Integrating Science and Ethics Into the Classroom
STELA Student Division has been working with the Student Society for Stem Cell Research (SSSCR) to help educate middle and high school students about the science and ethics of stem cells. We have posted our ethics presentation materials. Please feel free to contact us at STELAberkeley@gmail.com if you have any questions. STELA's ethics curriculum serves as an introduction to bioethics for young students, specifically applied to stem cell research. The curriculum discusses contemporary policy implications, but focuses on allowing small groups of students to contemplate the following questions: (1) who should be responsible for making ethical decisions concerning stem cells and (2) how should these decisions be made? We teach students that these issues are complex and that while there are no "right" answeres, it is still important to discuss and work through bioethical problems and formulate well though-out opinions that can inform policy decisions. In this version of the presentation, we provide students with a toolkit of some basic bioethical principles, and then have students split into small groups and discuss how policymakers should decide which diseases should get the most stem cell research funding. This allows students to engage in critical debate with each other and also learn to compromise in order to come to a final group decision to present to the class. download PDF of presentation download PowerPoint of presentation download PDF of presentation script download PDF of some disease information download PDF of citations
