The goal of the project was providing fire
regime reference data for coniferous forests, assisting in the development of
fire management and forest plans under consideration or under revision within
the four National Forests. Fire scar dendrochronology is used in many
areas of the United States in reconstructing historical patterns of fire
frequency, fire season, and fire extent. Certain portions of California
(southern Sierra Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin) have been extensively sampled
for fire history, but similar research has been lacking for the southern
California mountains. Here we provide fire history information for conifer
forests within the four National Forests of southern California (Los Padres,
Angeles, San Bernardino, and Cleveland), and one California State Park (Cuyamaca
Rancho State Park) in the Peninsular and Transverse mountain ranges of southern
California.
