Measuring the Rate of Spread of Chaparral Prescribed Fires in Northern California
The rate of spread of prescribed fire in chaparral was measured using audio explosive devices (click images for full-sized picure):
Piccolo Petes Shotgun Shell Primer
Piccolo Pete’s1 or shotgun shell primers are placed at intervals along a line transect where rates of spread can be observed during the fire.
Piccolo Pete’s whistle for approximately 30 seconds; and shotgun shell primers explode with a firecracker-like sound.
Note--Shotgun shell primers should be placed within the live canopy to deflect projectiles that may cause potential harm to fire personnel.
