Research Interests: Insect vectors of bacteria and phytoplasmas that cause plant diseases. The roles of insects and insect vectors in bacterial ecology. Symbiosis of bacteria with plant sap-feeding insects. Epidemiology of insect-bacteria-plant interactions.

Current Research Projects : Epidemiology of diseases caused by xylem-inhabiting bacteria (Pierce's disease of grapes, almond leaf scorch, alfalfa dwarf, oleander leaf scorch) and phytoplasmas (X-disease, aster yellows), transmission mechanisms and epidemiology of prokaryotic parasites of leafhoppers and plants; insect-xylem endophyte interactions
