Hardness measurements, made as described in the lecture on 'what is a gem' or by indentation hardness testing, are useful in mineral identification. Values determined by these methods should be compared with tabulated values for known minerals. However, it should be recognized that hardness will vary with chemical composition. Hardness of different crystal faces will also vary.
