A mineral is defined both by its chemistry and structure. The chemical formula specifies only the type of atoms and their proportions.

However these atoms may be arranged in more than one way. This concept is well illustrated by the quartz minerals, where one chemical composition (SiO2) can exist in at least 7 different forms. These different structural forms are known as polymorphs.
