Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery Program at UCSF and Children’s Hospital Oakland

“The Impact of a Dedicated Team of Specialists on Epilepsy Surgery at Children's Hospital Oakland”

Through retrospectively viewing data from clinic charts, medication regimens, imaging data, neuropsychologic testing, operative reports and pathology specimens for all children undergoing epilepsy surgery at Children’s Hospital Oakland between 2001 and 2012.  Recently, Children’s Hospital of Oakland recruited specialists to focus on treating childhood epilepsy. This team consists of Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Neuropsychologists and Neuroradiologists.  With the arrival of this present team, CHO has been capable of providing the same type of surgical options for children with epilepsy as are available at large, university-affiliated children’s hospitals.  The focus of this study was to evaluate the performance of this surgical specialty group with respect to patient referral pattern, case volume, case complexity, neuropsychologic profiles and seizure control rates. Having a dedicated epilepsy team has increased the amount of patients they care for as well as having increased the complexity of treatments and procedures the patients may undergo.  Thus within the past epilepsy group and present there have been improvements of seizure outcomes. The types of epilepsy surgeries performed at Children’s Hospital of Oakland are Vagal Nerve Stimulation, Tuberous Sclerosis, hemispherectomy, lesionectomy, corpus collasotomy, and temporal lobe resections.

Sehra attends Los Medanos College where she maintains a 2.9 GPA. She has received the Certification of Great Tutors, a Certificate of Leadership, and the Scholarship Foundation. She plans on transferring to the University of California, Davis or University of California, Los Angeles and majoring in Psychology with a Biology emphasis. Her ultimate goal is a Mediacl Doctorate.
