Members of the Dawson Lab are involved in different activities that promote our DEI values and engage different communities around us.

Jeannie is a founding member and co-coordinator for AY 2021-2022 of Civil and Environmental Engineers for Anti-Racism (CEE-FAR). CEE-FAR is a student group that aims to push for immediate and sustained action to create a CEE department that reflects our values of anti-racism and social justice.  She has also been been on the organizing committee since 2017 for the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference. EYH os an event that aims to help girls explore opportunities in STEM and provide information and resources to their families so they can pursue higher education.

Due to uneven access to the field and lab among students, one of Rebekah’s long-term goals has as an earth/environmental scientist is to increase high school level exposure to these relevant issues. She is involved in the Be a Scientist mentorship program in Berkeley, through which she helps middle school students create and investigate a scientific question and develop skills using the scientific method. She is also still involved with setting up an accessible Earth Science activity to engage high school students in seismology from their homes with partners in Michigan.
