Phillis Wheatley's poems about nature
Phillis Wheatley was born in 1753 on the west coast of Africa, enslaved, and then taught in the Wheatley household by the mother and daughter. She was certified as an authentic poet, well versed in classical and biblical literature, by members of Bostonís upper class. Her book was the first published book of poetry by an African-American and the first published book of literature by a female African-American. Her poems proved that African-Americans can be educated and think creatively. Further information can be found in: Major Problems in American Environmental History, Chapter 6, Doc 1.
