CALIFORNIA NUTMEG

(Torreya californica Torr.)

(Taxaceae)

Called nutmeg because of the resemblance of its fruit to the nutmeg of commerce. There is no relation between the two botanically. Although it yields a wood of excellent technical qualities, it is unimportant commercially because it is a rather rare tree found only in California among the redwoods from Mendocino County south to Santa Cruz, and in the foothills of the Sierras. Maximum size 4' x 100', but usually under 2' x 70'. Wood is light, soft, close-textured and easily worked. Used locally for cabinets, patterns. Specimen is 1" x 151/2" x 7'0" and was cut in Mendocino County.
