Several species of Shorea go under this name. This is a tall straight tree attaining a diameter of 5 feet. Abundant. Wood is moderately heavy to light, soft. Works easily. It is used for light furniture and construction and inferior cabinet work. Softer pieces are well-suited for patterns. Red Lauan forms about 90% of the Philippine Mahogany shipped to the United States.
