Grains The
"pyramid" shape provides a visual representation of a nutritious diet.
It shape illustrates that the foundation or base of a healthy
diet consists of breads, cereal, pasta, rice and noodles. These foods
are high in carbohydrates, which gives us energy for our daily activities.
It also contains fiber as well as vitamins and minerals which are beneficial for
our health.
Fruits
and Vegetables Fruits and vegetables make up the next two categories
of the pyramid. Like the grains, our diet should include all types of fruits and
vegetables daily, especially those high in antioxidants such as Vitamin A, C,
E, and folic acid. Fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals which are protective
against cancer. You will learn more about these in lesson 4 on fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables also contain fiber which helps with lowering cholesterol
and reduces risk of heart disease, and promotes regularity. |
