Biography (see ESPM page)

Research Interests

My research focuses on global change, especially the impact of global homogenization, including biological invasions.  The work addresses basic and applied questions, taking advantage of the opportunities associated with the geography of the Pacific Basin, Pacific Islands, and Pacific Rim, including California.

Research includes studies of the origins of endemic, indigenous and non-indigenous organisms, processes associated with colonization and invasion, population structure, species interactions, and response to climate change.  Approaches include population genomics, computational biology, GIS, niche modeling, natural experiments, collections-based research, and other tools. Some of this work deals with older colonizations and geological history, such as the assembly of ecological communities of Pacific islands and other work examines recent biological invasions, their causes, impacts, and solutions, including disease vectors and biological control.

The Island Digital Ecosystem Avatars (IDEA) Project:  Moorea is inspired by efforts to digitize an entire island ecosystem from ‘genes to satellites’ and was initiated by researchers at UC Berkeley, CNRS-EPHE, ETH Zürich, Oxford University, UC Santa Barbara, and the MCR LTER. It draws on the significant progress being made to model complex systems and harnesses and extends these efforts to build advanced computational models of a range of complex socio-ecological systems, particularly islands (coupled natural-human systems) and cities (built environment).  Recent news:  To assess and predict the future of Earth’s ecosystemBreakthroughs (Fall 2016); Tropical paradise inspires virtual ecology lab, Nature, 517, 255-256 (2015)

The Moorea Biocode Project is the first comprehensive inventory of all non-microbial life in a complex tropical ecosystem.  Supported by a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Moorea Biocode Project is sending researchers climbing up jagged peaks, trekking through lush forests and diving down to coral reefs to sample the French Polynesian island’s animal and plant life. The library of genetic markers and physical identifiers for every species of plant, animal and fungi on the island is now publicly available through the Moorea Biocode Database as a resource for ecologists and evolutionary biologists around the world.  News: Treasure island: pinning down a model ecosystemNature 439, 378-379(2006)

Hawaii Dimensions of Biodiversity is using the Hawaii Island chronosequence to understand out how communities of arthropods assemble over time, and particularly the relative roles and timing of ecological processes (migrating into a community, trophic levels) and evolutionary processes (adaptation and speciation).  Prospectus, Global Ecology and Biogeography 25, 769-780 (2016)
