Mission & Guiding Principles

Berkeley Student Farmers at the Oxford Tract

Mission

Growing Roots projects function to build and maintain a just, sustainable and equitable local food system for the Bay Area. We center ecological sustainability and social and economic viability of urban agriculture, in all its forms, and lift up the innovations, needs, and direction from BIPOC and other historically underserved communities. Our work directly benefits farmers and low-income consumers and the educators, advocates, and lawmakers who serve them.

Guiding Principles

The next visionary step for Growing Roots projects is to support the ecosystem of those involved in local food system efforts into a vibrant Collaborative. Starting in late winter/early spring 2021, Growing Roots teammates housed at UC Berkeley will launch community conversations to collaboratively develop the principles and processes of such a Collaborative.
