Congratulations to Alain de Janvry, professor emeritus of Agricultural and Resource Economics, on receiving the University of California’s 2026 Constantine Panunzio Distinguished Emeriti Award.
Named for the late Constantine Panunzio, a longtime UCLA sociology professor credited with shaping the architecture of the UC Retirement System, the prize recognizes the continued scholarly or educational service by emeriti faculty from across the UC system. De Janvry, who retired from Berkeley in 2017, is the fifty-seventh recipient of the honor and the seventh UC Berkeley emeriti faculty member to receive the award. He is honored alongside Monique Borgerhoff Mulder, a UC Davis professor emerita of Anthropology and the award's fifty-sixth recipient.
De Janvry, a distinguished professor of the Graduate School, has remained a leading scholar in development economics, agricultural policy, and the study of poverty and the political economy of institutions since his retirement. His ongoing research focuses on evidence-based policymaking and economic risk management for vulnerable populations. He continues to collaborate with international development agencies to conduct subjective performance evaluations in China, study index-based disaster funds in Mexico, and explore the uptake of climate-resilient rice varieties in India.
Recent studies in the American Economic Review and AEJ: Applied Economics have offered economists new ways to consider the role of bureaucratic incentives, disaster recovery, technology diffusion, and insurance adoption. That empirical work has directly shaped program designs across governments and non-governmental organizations.
Above all, de Janvry remains a dedicated mentor, advising graduate students, junior faculty, and research partners, and continues to advance the use of evidence in policy design and implementation.
A celebration recognizing de Janvry will be held at a later date. Learn more about the award at the UCLA Office of Academic Affairs and Personnel.
