Publicizing your event

The UC Berkeley Calendar network is a wonderful resource for sharing campus events with other departments’ and units’ online calendars.

Rausser College has a calendar on the calendar network, which is moderated by the Rausser College’s communications team and reserved for events related to the research and teaching topics in the College. To submit an events listing, login with CalnetID, then fill out the form and suggest your event to the College’s calendar. If you don’t see your event listing appear within a few days, feel free to contact us at raussercollege-comms@berkeley.edu.

Press For Your Publications or Awards

First, congratulations on the publication or award!

Now, we know you’ll want to get the word out.

The UC Berkeley Public Affairs team covers research with both press releases and jump pages, which are shorter posts that link out to a study or press release from another outlet. Here’s an example of a press release and an example of a jump page. A number of factors affect whether the news team will do a press release on your research, including:

  • how “newsworthy” or groundbreaking the research is, or if the content is about an award or grant, how big it is.
  • The journal publishing the research (NatureSciencePlos One, and similar journals are most likely)
  • How much the content will appeal to a public readership and/or how likely they think it is that a news outlet will pick up the press release
  • The other stories they are writing and their deadlines
  • How much advance notice they have before the publication date (we all like to publish the release on the same day the journal publishes. So, contact us as soon as you know your paper will be published!)

Please contact Julie Gipple (julie_gipple@berkeley.edu) when you have an publication in a prominent research journal and she will work with you and UC Berkeley Public Affairs.

*For research or awards that may not be announced by UC Berkeley Public Affairs, we still have many options to promote through the Rausser College website, the departmental website, and the College social media channels. Contact Julie for more information.
