Reel to Reel Film Series: Seeds of Time, Feb 25

Wednesday, February 25, 2015

10,000 years ago the biggest revolution in human history occurred: we became agrarians. We ceased merely hunting and gathering and began to farm, breeding and domesticating plants that have resulted in the crops we eat today. But the genetic diversity of these domesticated crops, which were developed over millennia, is vanishing today. And the consequences of this loss could be dire.

In Seeds of Time, we follow crop diversity pioneer Cary Fowler as he races against time to protect the future of our food. Gene banks of the world are crumbling, crop failures are producing starvation-driven rioting, and the accelerating effects of climate change are already affecting farmers globally. But Fowler's journey, and our own, is just beginning. From Rome to Russia and, finally, a remote island under the Arctic Circle, his passionate and personal journey may hold the key to saving the one resource we cannot live without: our seeds. (77 min)

Seeds of Time will be followed by a Q&A with special guest Sibella Kraus, Executive Director of SAGE, Growing Green Regional Food Leader, and founder of Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) and the iconic San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market.
