The Shih lab focuses on engineering plants, microbes, and proteins for novel applications in agriculture, sustainability, human health, and bioenergy. We utilize a blend of synthetic biology, biochemistry, functional genomics, and evolutionary biology to better understand plant and microbial systems. A main focus of the lab is to train highly interdisciplinary, creative, and collaborative scientists that appreciate both fundamental science and applied research.

We are housed in two locations: Koshland Hall at UC Berkeley’s Department of Plant and Microbial Biology and the Joint BioEnergy Institute at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
