Make Arabidopsis produce vegetable oil

Embryonic root to adult root transition in Arabidosis. Plant embryo cells accumulate starch, oil and proteins which ate ued up during seedling germination. Mutations in the PICKLE gene maintain the embryonic state in germinating seedlings. As a results, pickle mutant produces a storage root that accumulates oil, starch and proteins. However, lateral roots of pickle mutant are normal, probably because they do not originate from the embryo.

San Francisco Chronicle reported that with title "Scientists think they can make potatoes produce vagetable oil". "Discovery of mutant mustard plants with freakishly swollen roots may lead to crops such as potatoes that are genetically engineered than starch in thrir roots. Bay Area scientists say."--San Frncisco Chronicle. July 4, 1997
