First ford, Battle Camp Road
Battle Camp Road carried us west to Lakefields National Park. It began 863 kilometers of unpaved road--often muddy, sandy, eroded, or severely washboarded, through virtually uninhabited bush to Cape York. The only scraps of pavement are around the two tiny towns Coen (pop. 200) and Bamaga (pop. 2000).

"Battle Camp" recalls a bloody battle near here in 1873, when 500 Aborigines attacked several hundred diggers enroute from Cooktown to the Palmer River goldfields.
