The research program in my laboratory has included: (1) studies of evolutionary biology and
ecology of aquatic insects, crustaceans, and mollusks in stream, river, and wetland habitats;
(2) the control of water-borne disease vectors, especially river blindness (onchocerciasis) in
West Africa; (3) the development of techniques for the biological assessment of water quality;
and (4) habitat restoration and ecological management of the Sacramento-San Joaquin
Delta. Current research projects, often done in collaboration with former graduate students
and post-doctoral scientists, involve microplastic pollution, population genetics, improved
conservation strategies, and evaluation of techniques for water quality monitoring.
