How Do We Test for SOD?

pipeting4Testing for Phytophthora ramorum, the causal agent of SOD.

The UC Berkeley Forest Pathology and Mycology Laboratory uses three different methods to test for the presence of Phytophthora ramorum, the causal agent of Sudden Oak Death (SOD). Follow the links below to learn more and find out how you can test for SOD yourself

Testing for SOD is an integral part of management and disease control. Our lab does not provide a year-round SOD testing service. However each spring we conduct the SOD Blitz Survey Project that trains “citizen-scientists” to collect leaf samples in their communities and provides free testing in our laboratory. For information on SOD testing at other times of the year please visit
