Activities at the Berkeley Center for Ocean Futures are supported by grants and donations, which allow us to conduct cutting-edge research around the world and train a new generation of scientists to tackle pressing ocean challenges.

As a new collective, we are fundraising to support several initiatives in our inaugural year. These initiatives include research, public services and educational opportunities that provide Berkeley faculty and students with exceptional access to marine systems in the San Francisco Bay and in Moorea, French Polynesia (UC Gump South Pacific Research Station); a seminar series highlighting ocean scholarship and research on campus; and a symposium inviting nearby academic institutions, nonprofits, national marine sanctuaries, and ocean-based startups to identify applied research opportunities and catalyze local partnerships.

As our collective grows, we hope to expand these activities into student, faculty, and staff funding and internship opportunities; student exchange programs between Berkeley and universities in coastal regions worldwide; seed grants for innovative pilot research; broadening of ocean-related curriculum at Berkeley; and a formal network of community organizations, academic institutions, government agencies, and scientific communicators in the Bay Area and Moorea (French Polynesia) to identify action-oriented, equitable, and policy-relevant research priorities. Support for these actions will help translate research activities at Berkeley into tangible ocean conservation.
