I am currently an associate professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management and an affiliate of the Center for Labor Research and Education at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to returning to Berkeley, I was an assistant professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at MIT. I completed my Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley in 1999, and completed my undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering and Political Science at MIT in 1989.

While conducting my Ph.D. research I lived in Vietnam, and still regularly conduct research there. Prior to my Ph.D., I lived in Thailand and worked for the United Nations Environment Programme. Before that, I lived in Seattle and worked for a small non-profit called the Pollution Prevention Research Center.

I have worked recently as a consultant to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank, and the US Environmental Protection Agency on pollution prevention, cleaner production, industrial ecology, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility issues.

I am currently researching the environmental and social impacts of a number of global supply chains - including garments, shoes, paper, coffee, electronics, and petrochemicals - from resource extraction, to manufacturing, to use and disposal. I am interested in governmental and non-governmental strategies for monitoring and accountability over these production systems, and new models of public participation in environmental and labor policy regulation.
