Dr. Stephanie Pau, Ph.D.

Principal Investigator

Stephanie Pau is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC Berkeley. She received her Ph.D. from UCLA, after which she was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Center for Ecological Analysis & Synthesis. She was faculty at Florida State University for ten years before coming back to California, her home state, in 2024.

Ryan Slapikas​

Ph.D. candidate (FSU)

Ryan is researching spectral traits of grasses and grass evolutionary lineages across multiple scales (plot, airborne, satellite measures). Ryan’s research interests also entail invasive species distributions, biogeography, machine learning, and object-detection.

Shannon Bayliss, Ph.D.​

Postdoctoral researcher

Shannon’s research examines how plant trait variation is distributed on the landscape and the role this variation plays in ecosystem processes like productivity and water-cycling. She also incorporates genetic variation into spatial models to make more informed predictions of how climate change will affect species ranges and ecosystem functioning.

Jerry has been exploring different metrics of spectral and taxonomic diversity to assess the ability of hyperspectral data to predict grass functional diversity

Gio de Luna Bernal

Undergraduate researcher​

Gio is analyzing a decade-long record of Hawaiian forest phenology and using stable isotope analysis to understand differences in how tree species respond to seasonal and interannual climatic fluctuations.
