Fairy circles, bare circular patches in dry grassland, were believed to exist only in Africa’s Namib Desert. Their origin, until recently, was as mystery; theories ranged from toxic volatiles killing the vegetation, insects eating the plants roots, resource self-partitioning by the plants, to a performance space for nocturnal dancing fairies. The recent discovery of similar formations in the remote outback of Australia seems to support the third self-organization theory.
