The chambered nautilus, a cephalopod mollusk that has lived on Earth for about 5oo million years and has survived five mass extinction events, is probably approaching its own extinction. Overfishing, mostly for their decorative shells, combined with a slow reproductive rate have driven their population levels and genetic diversity to dangerously low levels.
