Pregnant women still need folic acid to prevent birth defects

Folic acid taken during pregnancy, either in the diet or from supplements, has been shown to drastically reduce the incidence of neural tube defects in babies. Since this recommendation was first made in 1991 public health officials have observed a dramatic decline in this type of birth defect. Folic acid is most important when the brain and spinal cord are first forming, within 28 days of conception.
