The actress, Patty Duke aka Anna Pierce, died at the age of 69 from sepsis, a common and often misdiagnosed illness that kills 250,000 Americans a year. Sepsis, also called septicemia or blood poisoning, is a toxic blood disease caused by the body’s response to infection and is currently the 9th leading cause of disease related deaths in the US. Patty Duke died specifically from infection resulting from a gastrointestinal perforation also referred to as a ruptured intestine.
