Course
Objective
Soils are important components of global biogeochemistry, playing a major role in the global carbon, nitrogen, and hydrological cycles. We will focus on the major organic and inorganic properties of soils, and the processes which form them, and discuss how this knowledge can be used to address a number of environmental issues. Emphasis will be placed on introductory problem solving skills and their use in common environmental problems. Additionally, we will learn the US soil classification system, and will practice its use in classroom exercises.
The course
requires no prior training in soils, but courses in general chemistry
and mathematics (including an introduction to calculus) will
be helpful or needed, but again are not required. Students enrolled in
ESPM 121 are strongly encouraged to enroll in ESPM 122, the weekend
field
course. ESPM 122 provides hands on experience, and introduces students
to basic field skills in pedology and Quaternary geology that will
prove
useful for many uses. It also emphasizes scientific writing skills.
