Mysterious slimy biofilm vs stone monuments worldwide

A creeping “black slime” is taking over historic monuments and stone buildings worldwide and there is no readily available cure. From Angkor Wat to Washington’s Jefferson Memorial to the Roman ruins, biofilms, which range in color from rust red to dark brown to gray/black, are the result of microbial colonization that may include members of all five Kingdoms. The biofilms are made up of microbial colonies that slowly erode the stone surfaces, leaving them pitted and turning them into perfect habitat for further colonization.
