Coral Bleaching, named for the white bleached-out color marine reefs take on when they die, has reached unprecedented levels in the Pacific ocean. The “bleaching” occurs as the result of rising water temperatures, when the coral expels the photosynthetic algae that normally live inside them and provides them with food. Reefs can recover but the it takes time and up to 50% of the bleached reefs may not survive.
