A recent study has shown that humans and lowland gorillas are separated on a genetic level from humans by only 1.6%. A laboratory technique called, long-read sequencing allowed researchers to close the unknown gaps in the gorilla DNA sequence so that it can be compared to the already well studied human genome. Don’t get too excited though, our closest relatives, the chimpanzees and bonobos only differ from the human genome by 1.2%. If you’re not familiar with bonobos check out the Nat Geo Video below.
