Scientists studying the social organization of ancient societies have proposed that ritual human sacrifices helped create the hierarchies present in many societies today. The use of human sacrifice in early societies encouraged the transition of small egalitarian societies to larger, socially stratified ones. Further, these practices created and preserved existing social hierarchies and contributed to fixed social strata and the establishment of elite rulers and powerful religious figures. Needless to say, the bottom end of the social ladder suffered reduced social mobility and, of course most of the sacrificing.
