Science searches for an alternative to opioids

The opioids, including morphine, hydrocodone, fetanyl, etc., are alkaloid compounds used as powerful painkillers in human medicine. They can be dangerous, as the body develops tolerance with continued use,  they are highly addictive, and an overdose may lead to fatal respiratory depression. Scientists have been working to develop alternative pain killers that equally effective but without the obvious drawbacks.
