Alix Blair
Ph.D. Student-ERGAlix has a Masters in Environmental Management from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University with a focus in Human Rights and Conservation. Her graduate research in southwestern Uganda won multiple awards, including the Duke Center for Human Rights Fellowship. Alix is certified in Ecological Horticulture from the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz and, for a time, worked on small-scale organic farms. She recently completed the six-month certificate program in Climate Change + Health, through the Yale School of Public Health. Alix is also an award-winning documentary maker, both in film and audio, and has been working in nonfiction storytelling for over a decade, as a creator and as a teacher, focusing on stories of human rights, women’s voices, environmental justice and trauma-awareness. She is the founder and director of Maailma LLC, a small documentary film company in Oakland, CA and is completing her second documentary feature film. She co-founded the Bay Area-based Collective of Documentary Women Cinematographers and was selected for UC Berkeley Journalism’s Investigative Reporting Program’s workshop for independent documentary filmmakers. She is a researcher and speaker on vicarious trauma in documentary filmmaking, and she is also a trauma-informed yoga teacher.
