Deibi Sibrian
Ph.D. Student-ESPM
Deibi, an interdisciplinary political ecology doctoral student at UC Berkeley in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, coined “Cryptonocene” to study cryptocurrencies’ ecological and community health impacts and related energy-intensive industries like artificial intelligence. Currently, his research centers on Bitcoin mining’s energy demand and what he calls “crypto-electric plantations” in El Salvador. With diverse research interests in energy transitions, development, displacement, food sovereignty, and health, Deibi utilizes remote sensing technologies and ethnographic research to study complex crypto-mining issues. Before joining Berkeley, he conducted agricultural field site investigations and occupational health and safety research with Washington State’s Department of Labor and Industries.
