Avarna is a lab assistant in Whendee Silver’s lab. She graduated from Vanderbilt University in May 2017 with a major in Biological Sciences and a minor in Environmental Studies. She also recently completed a coding bootcamp called Hackbright Academy to become a Software Engineer. She loves converting excel worksheets into python and R scripts in every lab she works at in an effort to make data analysis more standardized and efficient. Before joining the lab at Berkeley, she worked at Wendy Yang’s lab at UIUC where she studied the soil carbon and nitrogen cycles in Biofuel crops like corn and sorghum on the new DOE funded project called CABBI. She also previously interned at the MAERC Ranch of Archbold Biological Station where she studied grazing patterns and the effects of fire on above ground carbon and methane emissions using LICOR technologies and R studio.
