What is an Advisor Code?

CNR students get lab research experience.

An Advisor Code is a number you obtain from your undergraduate major advisor that will give you access to Tele-BEARS. You must obtain an Advisor Code (AC) before you can access the Tele-BEARS registration system. Please be advised that ACs change each semester; therefore, you must obtain a new AC for each semester you plan to register on the Berkeley campus.

When is TeleBEARS Advising?

Tele-BEARS advising begins as soon as the following semester's online schedule is posted. Generally early October and late March is when students can begin preparing for planning their schedule. Students are strongly encouraged to receive advising 3 weeks prior to their actual Tele-BEARS appointment. During this time period the advising office is very busy so preparation and planning ahead will make your advising go smoothly.

Who has my Advisor Code?

If you are declared, your undergraduate staff advisor has your Advisor Code.

If you are undeclared, you should go to the Office of Instruction and Student Affairs in order to pick up a list of advisors who are specially designated for undeclared students.

How to Get An Advisor Code

  • Fill out a Tele-BEARS form. Only lecture/primary sections need to be put on the form. Include laboratory and discussion sections only if you get additional units for them.
  • If you are declared, make an appointment with your undergraduate staff advisor or go to the advisor’s office hours. You should do this each semester at least three days before your Tele-BEARS date. Your advisor will go over your proposed schedule with you, sign your Tele-BEARS form, and give you your Advisor Code.
  • If you are undeclared, go to 260 Mulford Hall to pick up a list of faculty advisors who are specially designated for undeclared students. You should also have received a pdf version of this list via email. Stop by one of the faculty advisor’s office hours with your Tele-BEARS form. Once you have obtained the signautre of the faculty advisor, turn your Tele-BEARS form in to the Office of Instruction and Student Affairs where you will receive your Advisor Code.

You are responsible for obtaining your advisor’s signature in time to meet your Tele-BEARS deadlines. Waiting to obtain your Advisor Code until the assigned date and time of your Phase I enrollment period is not a good idea.

If you have a legitimate reason for not being able to meet with an advisor in person, you need to fill out an Advisor Code Release Form, complete it, and fax it to the appropriate student affairs office. If you are undeclared, fax your documents to the Office of Instruction and Student Affairs at (510) 643-3132. If you are declared in a major, fax your documents to your undergraduate staff advisor.

What is Tele-BEARS?

Tele-BEARS is an interactive computer system that allows you to enroll in classes via the Internet. Tele-BEARS operates in real time, so you always receive the most immediate, up-to-the-moment information regarding your enrollment status.

Tele-BEARS Enrollment Periods

To ensure a fair distribution of courses for all students, enrollment takes place in two phases followed by an adjustment period.

Fall 2009 Enrollment Periods

Phase I: April 13 - July 14
Phase II: July 16 - August 16
Adjustment Period: Beginning August 17

Spring 2010 Enrollment Periods

Phase I: October 19 - November 9
Phase II: November 10 - January 10
Adjustment Period: Beginning January 11

Phase I

In Phase I, undergraduates can enroll in up to 10 units plus one Physical Education activity course (courses numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5) for a total of 10.5 units; graduate students can enroll in up to 12 units plus one Physical Education activity course for a total of 12.5 units.

Units for waitlisted courses are included in these unit totals. You are free to adjust your schedule as long as you stay within the 10.5/12.5 unit limit.

Phase II

Effective Fall 2009, an undergraduate will not be able to add an additional class if s/he is already enrolled and/or waitlisted in 16 or more units. For example, if you are enrolled and/or waitlisted for 15 units, you would still be allowed to add or waitlist for another class. Both enrolled and waitlisted units are included as part of your unit total. Phase II is your first opportunity to add more classes so that you can attain a full course load.

The Adjustment Period

During the Adjustment Period, you can add courses up to a maximum of 19.5 units. The ending date of the Adjustment Period (i.e., how long Tele-BEARS is available for a particular function) is at the end of the 5th week of classes.

A $10 fee is charged for each class dropped after the second week of instruction (undergraduates) and after the third week of instruction (graduate students). A $5 fee is charged to all students for each class added after the third week of instruction. Note: Students who are not officially registered by the end of the third week of instruction will be charged a $150 late registration fee if they become officially registered afterwards.

After Tele-BEARS is no longer available, any schedule adjustments must be processed through your college, school, or department via the Online Add/Drop System (OLADS).


BearFacts is a database that allows you to access your curent class schedules, final grades for the previous semester, financial aid and award status, registration fee balances, CARS billing information, and other pertinent information. It also allows you to change your addresses and view your complete transcripts. Since it is not connected to Tele-BEARS, it is usually about a day behind the most current information available.
