Support from the College’s advisory board revitalizes the Student Resource Center

November 18, 2025

For nearly three decades, the Student Resource Center has been the hub for Rausser College of Natural Resources undergraduates seeking a welcoming environment on a bustling campus.

The cavernous room overlooking the Mulford Hall courtyard offers students ample space to spread out and study, use the computer lab, or unwind and meet with friends outside of class. Bulletin boards and displays share information about clubs, student groups, and job or internship opportunities, while wildlife photos by recent alum Vishal Subramanyan liven up the environment.

“Whether they’re seeking academic advising or just a place to relax between classes, our team takes great pride in offering an approachable, cheerful, and safe atmosphere for all students,” says Craig Crossley, the College’s intake advisor and one of the first faces students see when they enter the Resource Center.

This summer, the College was able to breathe new life into the space thanks to a collective $142,000 gift from the Rausser College of Natural Resources Advisory Board, which is composed of distinguished alums and friends of the College. Campus facilities crews spruced up the walls with a fresh coat of paint. Modular rolling tables with foldable tops replaced the room’s large wooden reading tables, one of the last vestiges of the Forestry Library that once occupied the space. New couches and chairs will help students feel more comfortable during study sessions.

“This center is an important resource for the College’s undergraduates, but we knew it could use a refresh,” says Advisory Board Chair Stacey Baba, BS ’77 Plant Pathology, who notes that the board chose to make the gift after touring the room last fall. “For the Big Give fundraising campaign this year, we wanted to support a project that would make a meaningful and immediate impact on the student experience.”

“We have always thought of the room as more than a study space, and we work our hardest to make improvements or accommodate students’ needs,” says Assistant Dean of Instruction and Student Affairs Joshua Dullaghan, who leads the advising team and helped shepherd the improvements. “We’re grateful to the advisory board for choosing to support our students.”

The new tables offer greater flexibility to host events, Dullaghan says, and also improve accessibility for visitors who use mobility devices. When advisors transform the room into a banquet hall to host undergraduates for dinners with the dean, students won’t have to worry about their plates sliding off the tables like they did before. The smaller, modular tables make it easier to form group study sessions, especially during peak study periods, and they can easily be pushed out of the way for presentations or large group gatherings.

“The first time I ever went to the Student Resource Center was for a study group, and I just kind of never left,” says fourth-year undergraduate Sanya Sitlani, who has also been a peer advisor working in the space since 2023. “It’s an important community space for students in the College, and I think the improvements make it more social and help facilitate collaboration and interaction.”
