In this lecture, Berit Kristoffersen (University of Tromsø) examines the controversial practice of commercial-scale deep-sea mining in Norway. This has led to political tug of war of the ice edge as a cartographic object, as debates over where the line should be drawn on the map allow for the extractive move further northward. Such discourse highlights the relationship between speculation, energy and geography, and how these struggles are mediated and settled through maps, especially with the seabed frontier in the making.
