Juan is a UC Berkeley graduate in Interdisciplinary Studies Field with a concentration on environmental sustainability. Before immigrating to the United States, Juan’s family elaborated Tapetes de lana, or wool textiles crafted entirely from local, natural materials native to the valley region of Oaxaca, Mexico. Since arriving to California, his family has recycled plastic bottles, aluminum cans and scrap metals to help pay the expenses of a 5 person household while Saturday mornings have been reserved for family trips to yard sales where Juan has learned his sense of style! Juan’s culture and upbringing have directly influenced his view on the coexistence between humans and the environment and have ultimately driven him to pursue a career in the environment where he hopes to engage more of his community into the forefront of the environmental movement.
