Richard Beahrs, '68
Richard Beahrs served on the United Nations Hunger Task Force and as a Trustee of the School of Management at St. Petersburg University in Russia, and as Chairman of the Arbor Day Foundation. He is now retired and formerly served as President of Courtroom Television Network and the Comedy Channel. He also worked at Time Warner Division Home Box Office, the Comedy Channel, Sports Illustrated and Life magazines. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the World Agroforestry Centre in Nairobi and the Near East Foundation in New York. Beahrs served as President of Cal’s student body and Interfraternity Council as an undergrad and earned an MBA at Adelphi University. With his wife Carolyn, he established CNR’s Beahrs’ Environmental Leadership Program and serves on the Program’s Executive Committee. He was the first recipient of the College of Natural Resources Citation in 2003 and is currently Co-Chair of the CNR Advisory Board Development Committee. Mr. Beahrs is a Trustee Emeritus of the UCB Foundation. Dick, Carolyn and their four children all have Berkeley degrees.
Arianna Carughi, '87
Arianna Carughi, Ph.D., is a Health & Nutrition Research Coordinator for Sun-Maid Growers of California, where she initiates and manages Sun-Maid funded research. Dr. Carughi is also a consultant/expert spokesperson for American Pistachio Growers and the California Dried Fruit Coalition and advises emerging companies in the health tech industry. Carughi received a Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences from the College of Natural Resources at UC Berkeley and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Stanford University. Her formal education includes an MS in Human Nutrition from Columbia University and a bachelor's degree in biology, ecology & conservation from Vassar College.
Mike Cheng, '77
Mike Cheng is an adjunct professor and a member of the Advisory Board of Golden Gate University's Ageno School of Business. In 2007, he and a group of Asian American executives co-founded an organization to help Asian American professionals develop their leadership skills and prepare them for career advancements. After leaving his Corporate Vice President/Division President position at Communications & Power Industries Inc. (CPI), a successor company to Varian Associates, in 2007 he became active in academic settings around the Bay Area. He was appointed Faculty-in-Residence at the College of Science in San Jose State University where he developed and taught a course on business skills for technology students. He is currently working with CNR staff and faculty in the newly launched Masters of Development Practice on the topics of public/private sector interactions and Corporate Social Responsibility. Since 2008, Mike has been serving on the "Free Radicals" steering committee to help raise funds for the College of Chemistry to upgrade the undergraduate chemistry laboratories and establish an endowed chair for a junior faculty member. In the Spring of 2013, he launched a seminar series on career development for undergraduate Chemical Engineering students in the College of Chemistry. Mike and his wife, Ruth are active participants at CNR's Beahrs' Environmental Leadership Program. Both Mike and Ruth graduated from Cal in 1977.
Michael Colvin, '05, '07
Michael Colvin graduated from the College of Natural Resources with a degree in Environmental Economics and Policy. Michael participated in the College Honors Research Program and Colloquia. Michael also actively worked in his capacity as a campus tour guide to recruit students into the college. Michael complimented his CNR training further by pursuing a master’s degree on campus at the Goldman School of Public Policy. His primary areas of interest include climate change policy, with a focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency. He currently works at the California Public Utilities Commission in the Policy and Planning Division.
Linda Schacht Gage, '66, '81
Linda Schacht Gage graduated from the College of Letters and Science with a major in sociology and later received a Masters of Journalism from Cal's Graduate School of Journalism. She has been a lecturer in the journalism school since 1992. Linda is a two-time Emmy-award winner for her coverage of national politics during her twenty year career in television broadcasting. She began her career at KQED-TV on that station’s well-known nightly news program, Newsroom. She then covered politics, locally and nationally, for KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco. Her father, Henry Schacht, was a UC Berkeley alumnus, former NBC broadcaster and San Francisco Chronicle agriculture columnist as well as serving on the CNR advisory board. Linda has served on the boards of the Berkeley Public Library Foundation, the UC Library Advisory Board, the Berkeley Film Foundation, the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, The Daily Californian, and the UC Berkeley Foundation. She was instrumental in raising funds for the four new branches of the Berkeley Public Library and chairs and emcees that library’s annual Authors Dinner.
Robert Gilbert, '45, '46, '47
Robert Gilbert is Board Chairman of the A.L. Gilbert Company which buys and sells feed, seed, and grain. He graduated from the former College of Agricultural Science at UC Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics.
Kass Green, '74
Kass Green is past President of the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) and the President of Kass Green and Associates where she consults on geospatial strategy, technology and policy issues to private, educational, and public organizations. Several years ago, Kass retired as President of Space Imaging Solutions. Prior to joining Space Imaging (now GeoEye), Kass was the President of Pacific Meridian Resources, a geospatial services company she co-founded in 1988 and sold to Space Imaging in 2000. Kass has published numerous articles and book chapters on remote sensing and GIS. The second edition of her textbook, Assessing the Accuracy of Remotely Sensed Data: Principles and Practices, co-authored with Dr. Russell Congalton, was recently re-published by Taylor and Francis. Kass received her B.S. degree in Forestry from the University of California at Berkeley, her M.S. degree in Resource Policy and Management from the University of Michigan, and advanced to PhD candidacy at the University of California at Berkeley.
Loni Hancock is the Senator for California’s 9th District. A longtime public servant, Hancock previously served three terms as the representative of the 14th Assembly District, where she chaired the Committee on Natural Resources. Senator Hancock led the Committee to pass historic environmental legislation that protects open space, expands recycling programs and promotes healthy city-infill strategies in the state. She also served two terms as the Mayor of Berkeley from 1986-1994, and then went on to head the Western Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Education under the Clinton Administration for eight years. Hancock also has served as the Executive Director of the Shalan Foundation, which funded environmental and economic justice projects nationally, and was President Jimmy Carter’s Regional Director for ACTION, overseeing a host of domestic volunteer programs.
Caryl O. Hart, PhD, '09
Dr. Hart is the director of Sonoma County Regional Parks, a system of more than 50 parks and regional trails. She was a member of the California State Parks Commission, appointed by three successive governors and served from 2000 to 2013. She led the commission as chair for seven years. Dr. Hart co-founded the Sonoma County Parks Alliance, which supports innovative management of state parks in Sonoma County, including management of Annadel State Park by Sonoma County Regional Parks during the budget crisis of 2012-13. Dr. Hart received her doctorate from UC Berkeley, where her focus was on the role of California State Parks in addressing the challenges of climate change, and she returned to UC Berkeley in 2010 as a visiting professor to teach a course on the history and challenges of the California State Park system. Dr. Hart acted for 15 years as an advisor to the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, and was a founding member of LandPaths, an environmental land trust and land management non-profit dedicated to maximizing resource conservation while allowing managed public access.
Stephen L. Hurst, JD, '78
Stephen Hurst is the Founder, Director, President and CEO of Savant HWP. Savant was founded in in 2009 to develop pharmaceutical products that improve health, maintain wellness and prevent disease. Savant has focused its research development on addiction medicine and neglected diseases like Leishmaniasis and Chagas disease that are emerging in the U.S. population and endemic in other parts of the world. Steve has more than twenty-five years experience in the biopharmaceutical industry and has contributed to the success of numerous complex and challenging healthcare projects. Prior to Savant, Steve was the Chief Business Officer for The Immune Tolerance Institute an affiliated program of UCSF (2007-2011). He also helped establish a human immune monitoring institute for The Regents of the University of California that continues to discover and develop immune biomarkers. As a consultant to The World Bank and BIO Ventures for Global Health (2005-2009), he helped establish an innovative funding mechanism for pneumococcal vaccines for the developing world (PneumoAMC). As Founder, President & CEO of Sequential, Inc. (2002-2004), his team acquired and developed a clinical-stage oncology drug for the treatment of multi-drug resistance. While at Inhale Therapeutic Systems, Inc., (now Nektar Therapeutics, Inc.) (1994-2002), he held several senior executive positions, including Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, interim Senior Vice President of Operations, Vice President of Intellectual Property and Licensing and Head of Business Development and helped the company grow to over 700 employees, raising more than $700 million in investment capital and generating revenues in excess of $100 million annually. Steve received his BS from the College of Natural Resources in 1978 and and his JD from Golden Gate University, School of Law. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the College of Natural Resources Advisory Board and co-chairs the facilities and capital renewal committee.
Mike Jani, '74
Mike Jani, President and Chief Forester, Humbolt Redwood Company, LLC. Mike previously held the position of President and Chief Forester of Mendocino Redwood Company, where he was responsible for the overall management of the MRC forestlands. Mike has excellent technical forestry skills, a great understanding of regulation and public interest in forestry, and played a key role in the FSC certification of the MRC lands. In his new role at MRC, Mike will provide leadership in implementing the MRC forestry practices on MRC’s lands, including establishing stewardship and forest operation objectives. Mike received his B.S. in Forestry from CNR in 1974.
Watson "Mac" Laetsch
Watson “Mac” Laetsch, former Vice Chancellor for Development, led UC Berkeley’s development effort during the last two years of Berkeley’s Keeping the Promise campaign. Previous administrative posts included service as vice chancellor for undergraduate affairs, director of the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden and director of the Lawrence Hall of Science. Laetsch attended Wabash College, earned his Ph.D. in biology at Stanford University, and is a UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus of Botany.
Carrie Maser, '87
Carrie Maser is the Director of Finance for the law firm of Karr Tuttle Campbell in Seattle, WA. She has been with Karr Tuttle for 17 years and commutes to Seattle monthly. She is a third generation Cal Bear and her grandmother worked for Ida Sproul shortly after graduation. Her husband, Ben, is also a Cal alum and played water polo for Cal in the mid 80s. Carrie is a 1987 graduate of CNR and majored in Political Economy of Natural Resources. She and Ben have two children ages 11 and 16 and live in Palo Alto. In addition to her new role on the Advisory Board, Carrie is also a member of the Measure A School Bond Citizen’s Oversight Committee for PAUSD, and enjoys tutoring-at-risk youth in East Palo Alto.
Steve McCormick, '73
Steve McCormick , B.S., is the former President of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, one of the largest Foundations in the U.S., from 2007-2014. From 2000 to 2008 Steve served as President and CEO of The Nature Conservancy National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. As president, he led the organization into becoming a truly global enterprise, operating in 30 countries as well as every state in the U.S. During his tenure, he oversaw an operating budget of over $500 million, and a highly distributed staff of over 3,000. Under Steve’s leadership, revenues from all sources increased significantly, hitting an all-time high of $1.2 billion in 2006. Steve began his career with TNC in 1976 as western regional legal counsel and rose through the ranks to spend 16 years as executive director of the California state program and Western Region. Prior to his role as President of TNC national, Steve was a founding partner of the Resources Law Group. Resources Law Group is based in Sacramento and provides transactional and consulting services in land-use and natural resources law and policy, and creates innovative opportunities for conservation philanthropy. Steve also serves on the boards of The Independent Sector, Sustainable Conservation, Science for Nature and People, and the California Wildlife Officers Foundation and several others. Steve has received widespread recognition and awards, including the Chevron Conservation Award, the Edmund G. Brown Award for Environmental and Economic Balance, the John Pritzlaff Conservation Award and the California League of Conservation Voters’ Conservation Leadership Award. Currently Steve is a Special Advisor at the David and Lucille Packard Foundation and is also serving the state of California on the department of Recreation and Parks Transformation Team for state parks. He is also a co-founder of the Earth Genome Project, a start-up venture to create the first global, open-source database on ecosystem services and natural capital, designed to guide decision-makers in the private and public sectors. Steve holds a B.S. in Agricultural Economics from the College of Natural Resources, UC Berkeley and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of Law (1976).
John Pardee, '69
John Pardee is a real estate and transactional attorney. Prior to his retirement in 2012, he worked in private practice with Brobeck, Phleger and Harrison in San Diego, then as a Senior Deputy with the Office of the San Diego County Counsel, and finally as Counsel in the Western Division of the Trust for Public Land. Prior to his nonprofit work, John’s legal practice focused on commercial real estate development and leasing, and he was the senior counsel for the County of San Diego’s real property and IT contracts. At TPL, John was lead counsel on numerous wilderness, farm and ranch land conservation and urban park projects in California, Hawaii, Colorado and Utah. John serves on the California Advisory Board of The Trust for Public Land, the steering committee for Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island (BSA), and recently served on the Board of Directors of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, a national organization which partners with colleges and universities to prepare and certify college undergraduates for careers with nonprofit organizations. In 2008, John, his wife Vera, Dick and Carolyn Beahrs and other members of the Pardee family established the George M. Pardee, Jr. Family Chair in International Sustainable Development at the College.
John Scharffenberger, '73
John Scharffenberger co-founded Scharffenberger Chocolates. He also founded Scharffenberger Cellars sparkling wine. While a grower of strawberries and nursery products in Mendocino County, Scharffenberger put into practice theories of organic farming and biodiversity he had learned at Berkeley and through his friendship with members of The Garden Project at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is an active advisor to several small food producing startups including Hodo Soy, Kaia Foods and Farmhouse Culture. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1973 with a combined major in botany, cultural anthropology, food history and geography.
David Warner, '76
David Warner is the founder and owner of Redhorse Constructors, a high-end custom home construction company in Northern California. He is also the CEO and co-founder of Elgin Energy Company, a geothermal development company in Northern California and founder of the Marin Agricultural Wind Co-op, a wind development charter whose mission is to provide locally produced energy to the Marin County energy grid. He received his undergraduate degree from the College of Natural Resources at the University of California, Berkeley in 1976 and his teaching credential in Biology from San Francisco State in 1977. In 1981 David founded Redhorse Constructors. With a focus on sustainability and pushing the green building envelope, David has built Redhorse into one of the nation’s premier custom home builders. In addition to a number of awards from the AIA, Architectural Digest, and local and industry organizations, in 2007 his efforts in sustainable construction and the implementation of green technologies in residential projects earned him the title Builder of the Year by the NAHB. As a result of David’s fascination with new technologies and materials and his great concern for the environment, he has acted as technical advisor on a number of projects including Sir Richard Branson’s project for island development and sustainability and a green museum in Washington D.C. designed by Ken Kao and Sim Van Der Ryn. In 2009, David’s passion for music and commitment to his local community lead to his involvement with the Marin History Museum. He created a new format for the Museum’s Music Center which included the production of a Metallica concert that set the stage for the endowment campaign.
Thomas J. White, Ph.D.
Thomas J. White, Ph.D. has more than 30 years of experience in medical biotechnology, evenly divided among three Bay Area firms: Cetus, the pioneering biotech firm where Dr. White supervised the development of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR); Roche Molecular Systems, which acquired the rights to PCR from Cetus and where the R&D group developed molecular diagnostics for HIV and other infectious diseases; and Celera, where, as Chief Scientific Officer, the discovery research group used genomic medicine to identify genes associated with chronic, complex diseases.
William Woods III, '73
William Woods, III retired from his position as Vice President of Acquisitions at Cornerstone Propane Partners, the fifth largest propane distributor in the U.S. He was the founder and president of Waterfowl Environment Preservation Organization, an organization dedicated to marsh habitat development which has now been in existence for 25 years. Woods received his B.S. in Conservation of Natural Resources from UC Berkeley.
