Congratulations to Professor Allen Goldstein, one of the world’s leading atmospheric chemists, for being named a recipient of the 2022 Haagen-Smit Clean Air Awards.
Presented annually by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the award honors outstanding scientists, policymakers, activists, and experts who have made transformative contributions toward improving air quality or addressing climate change.
Goldstein is the MacArthur Foundation Chair in the departments of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management and Civil and Environmental Engineering, and currently serves as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for Rausser College of Natural Resources. He has established himself as a global leader with a lifelong commitment to providing accurate and insightful data on air quality and climate change problems.
Initially interested in emissions from trees, Goldstein broadened his research to include indoor air pollution and vehicular, urban, agricultural, and wildfire emissions. According to CARB, his work has addressed some of the most complex and perplexing questions in atmospheric science and led to the development of state-of-the-art scientific instruments for sampling and analyzing air.
In addition to outstanding and groundbreaking research, Goldstein has also provided key guidance to policymakers addressing air quality and climate change.
Goldstein and other recipients will be honored during CARB’s June 22 board meeting in Sacramento.
