February 7th, 2018
Where was everyone today? Who knows. Looks like there are more slackers in club once might have initially anticipated.
Officer Announcements
-
Katie
-
The San Jose Sharks are doing something?
-
You could watch hockey with her
-
Katie is also down to facilitate other fun events in general, if anyone has ideas
-
March 22 is the hockey game
-
The tickets are $32, so you’d need to really like hockey, or sharks
-
-
Ben
-
Camila reminds us to pay our dues, despite her absence
-
$5 in cash or venmo Camila @ Camila-Quintana
-
-
Alegra
-
Bean feed next wednesday
-
Cancel all your Valentine’s day plans and come. Reminder: beans are incapable of infidelity
-
5pm, or earlier if you’d like to help set up
-
The cooking party is TBA
-
Jodi will publicize amongst faculty
-
End of announcement
-
-
Ben again
-
Mendocino Redwood company is coming next week to present, and to interview the next day
-
If you’re interested in a job, let ben know
-
-
Senior BBQ
-
Graduation and commencement make scheduling challenging
-
Who knows how long commencement will drag on
-
-
The club chooses Saturday, May 12 at 1 pm.
-
-
Hunter/Alegra
-
Tree planting is next week, tue and thurs 12:30-3ish. You do not have to stay the whole time
-
Meet at the foothill parking lot, the whole group will depart at once to avoid getting lost
-
-
Ben or maybe hunter
-
We have plans for a cal day booth
-
No specifics
-
-
Hunter again
-
150th class of the university is called the sesquicentennial
-
Ben isn’t much of a spelling bee guy
-
The class of ‘68 wants to meet the class of 2018; that will be thrilling I’m sure
-
Sat March 10th is when all those old gentlefolk will be around the Free Speech Movement Cafe to talk to
-
-
Andrew
-
Maybe Carol will help us get planting into the Daily Cal again
-
It happened last year, even with Alegra as publicity
-
Jodi wants to help
-
If you go to the planting, take pictures and upload them
-
-
Amanda
-
Who wants to do the tree walk on Cal Day?
-
It’s gotta be someone who isn't leaving
-
Amanda will help
-
Cal day is April 21st, the walk is 1-2pm.
-
If you like talking to dumb freshmen, you’ll love this
-
Also, the walk needs to be updated, since many of the featured trees have been removed
-
-
Sarah
-
Saturday is the UCCE Love concert
-
Tell your faculty friends
-
Our ticket collectors will be: Andrew and Katie. They might get in for free!
-
We also need an MC. Sarah doesn’t want to do it, so help her avoid embarrassment
-
Or, if you have any love or forestry related puns or jokes (or a combo), that would be great.
-
Email sarah
-
Here’s one for you: What’s it called when a tree falls in love?
-
PINING
-
-
Jodie suggests that the MC describes where the proceeds are going, and why the partnership with the Forestry Club has occurred
-
It seems Ben may be in charge of this
-
Also, Andrew will put it on a flyer
-
Go To This Concert
-
-
It’s a packed week next week, reminds Ben, so everyone get ready
Advisor Announcements
-
Jodi now manages the listserve
-
Email her to get on it
-
-
Rick Stafford (Or maybe Rick Stanford?), the legend, will be speaking at the Forestry Seminar next week, 12-1
-
John Battles is the Forestry Academic Advisor, Ginnie is still here
-
We hope to bring more faculty into our meetings
-
Thus, Scott Stevens is coming next week to talk about the Forestry Frat
-
-
Ben can’t remember the last thing
John Helms Speaks
-
Former SAF president
-
He is very accomplished
-
Why wouldn’t you want to be an SAF member, he asks?
-
John’s keys to success
-
Get married to the right person
-
Be a UCB faculty member
-
And join SAF
-
-
SAF
-
It’s good for networking
-
The internet just can’t replicate good old face to face communication
-
Although, I will point out that skype does allow for literal face to face communication
-
-
SAF is really like a big UCB Forestry Club, with dues that are higher proportionally
-
-
Why’d John become SAF president
-
He suggests always saying YES, because who knows where it will lead. You might become SAF president
-
Plus, he “needed to do it”
-
-
SAF Core ideas
-
“Forests are damned important”
-
They must be sustained
-
Foresters are dedicated to sound management
-
Foresters serve landowners and society
-
Like forest doctors
-
-
-
SAF has MONEY
-
If, someday, you’d like to embark on a forestry related project, SAF might just grant you some money
-
-
More importantly, they can grant you leadership skills and satisfaction!
-
John’s career was forged by SAF
Tree of the Week
-
Madeline brings us Abies Magnifica, the red fir
-
Nothing bad can happen under them
-
They are found through the Sierras and in the lower reaches of the Klamath
-
It’s a high elevation tree
-
200 ft tall, 6.6 ft DBH
-
They look like legos
-
If you take a knife to them, they are red beneath their bark
-
If you find that hard to remember, just note that people are also red under their bark, so Red Firs are just like us
-
-
They’ve got 600 birds in them, but just how that stacks up to other trees is unclear
BONUS ROUND
-
Jodi will give you something if you know what disturbance factors damage Red Firs
-
There’s a lot
-
Some bugs?
-
Root rot?
-
-
Andrew gets it
